The ingredients for perfect poached eggs
Eggs: Fresh eggs work best because the whites hold together better and give you a cleaner boiled egg.
Water: You will need boiling water to create the hot water bath inside the ramekins while the eggs cook in the air fryer.
Salt: Optional, to season the eggs before serving.
Frequently asked questions
At 200°C, fry the eggs in air for 6 minutes for soft and runny whites and yolks. If you prefer a stronger yellow, add another 1-2 minutes of cooking time. But every air fryer is different, so you may need to experiment with the timing to get the best results on yours.
yes! Boiled eggs can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 2 days. Once they are cooked, gently transfer them to an ice water bath to stop the cooking process. When ready to serve, reheat gently in warm water for a minute or two.
Lightly brush the ramekin with a little oil or butter before adding the boiling water and egg. This makes it much easier to gently remove the hard-boiled egg after it is cooked. A silicone spatula or slotted spoon also helps when removing the egg.
Richa’s top tips
- Do not overfill the ramekins. Fill them only halfway with water so that there is enough room for the egg without the water spilling out.
- Use a small steel bowl: I found that using a small steel bowl or the quarter it actually gave much better results compared to glass or ceramic.
- Preheat the air fryer. Do not skip the 200°C preheating step. Starting with a hot air pan creates the perfect poached eggs.
- Use tongs to remove the ramekins. They will be very hot after cooking, so use tongs and handle with care.
- Adjust the cooking time for your yolk. Six minutes gives you soft, runny yolks, but add a minute or two if you prefer your eggs more poached.
- Remove the eggs carefully. A slotted spoon works best to remove the eggs from the water without breaking the delicate yolk.
Storage tips
- Cool down: If you make these ahead, transfer the hard-boiled eggs to an ice water bath immediately after cooking. Once cooled, strain and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Reheating: Place the cold eggs in a bowl of warm water for 1-2 minutes to warm them. Avoid boiling water, as it can overcook the eggs and turn the yolks hard.
- Freezing: Not recommended. Hard-boiled eggs don’t freeze and thaw particularly well, and the whites can become rubbery and watery.
Ideas for service
Fried air fried eggs are best served warm, with something to soak up that runny yolk. Here are some easy ways to enjoy them:
- On the avocado toast: Mashed spoon avocado top with crispy toast, top with a poached egg and finish with salt, pepper and chili.
- Over a breakfast bowl: Add the boiled egg to a bowl fried vegetablesbaked potatoes or cereal for a filling breakfast.
- With potatoes for breakfast: Couple with crispy fries and some hot sauce for an easy weekend breakfast.
- In an English muffin: Add a poached egg to a toasted English muffin with some butter or cheese for a quick breakfast sandwich.
- Add to a salad: Ball a fresh salad with a boiled egg and let the runny yolk act as a creamy sauce. It works especially well with greens, tomatoes, avocado and a simple vinaigrette.
Did you know?
This small white string attached to the yolk is called the chalaza. It may seem like a piece of egg white that needs to be removed, but it actually has an important job. The chalaza anchors the yolk in place and helps keep it centered within the egg. You’ll usually notice it more clearly in very fresh eggs, and that’s actually a good thing. A prominent chalaza is one of the small signs that your egg is fresh. So the next time you crack open an egg and see that white, stringy bit, leave it at that.
