The Sunday Five: great socks and two pizzas to make this month

I know it’s a good morning when the coffee hits the rainbow cup.

Friends, hello. Me, you, Sunday! Let’s go for it!

For ten years, Let it be Sunday It’s been our weekly ritual here, but after seven months of pregnancy, with the great postpartum unknown following me, I decided it might be time to let go of our Sunday tradition. Ten years was a good long term, wasn’t it? I imagined replacing it with a nice monthly post called The Bakehouse Almanac. Seasonal, thoughtful, if not a little cheeky.

And you know what? It never actually landed. And that’s totally normal.

After eighteen years of writing on the internet, I insist on keeping this little corner a place where I can play, change my mind and… dare I say… have fun. (A real rebellion today.) On Instagram too, naturally, I heard from the youth that blogging is back. A pie directly in my face because I didn’t know it went anywhere.

Nearly six months into motherhood, I’d like to cautiously declare that I’m down, though I reserve the right to withdraw that distinction any night around 4am. But for this week. i have enough legs to know how much i miss seeing you here every week. While I don’t necessarily have the bandwidth for the extensive Sunday posts of yesteryear, I think I have enough fun to try something new.

We call it Sunday Thursday

Five things that caught my eye this week. Five tabs are still open in my browser. Something to read, something to cook, something to listen to, something useful that I just have to tell you about. A short Sunday offering that feels sustainable for this season of new-mom, cottage-bakery-owner life.

Let’s see how this feels. Here are today’s easy five.

• I’ve seen a lot of chatter about John Mayer this past week as his album Continuation: is 20 years old. Was this album big for you then? I guess I was deep into my Tool and Pearl Jam era and this album passed me by, but this post it was enough for me to come in and listen this week. It sounds before time. Until what exactly? I can’t put my finger on it except to gesture wildly in the air. I found John’s thoughts as well on loneliness interesting. Our asses don’t kick the ground anymore, he’s right.

• Our friend Amy: has some of the best finds on the internet. I usually read her lists at 3am after I’ve nursed the baby and put her back to sleep, which I did about two weeks ago, so. imagine my joy and surprise when a bag of fantastic socks! Pete Davidson socks signature doublesoul arrived at my door and I remembered my hazy purchase of the night. I even got a couple pairs for dad’s birthday so… nailed it! I love these socks.

And other news about my 45-year-old legs. I had never heard of this brand from Helsinki, Finland, but these Karhu running shoes I’ve upped my postpartum running game now that I’m pushing the stroller while I log the miles.

• My friend Amanda made the difference for me this weekend. He said it was an “apple drop” and not yet a “pumpkin drop” and he was absolutely right. Why rush pumpkin? How will that benefit us? Anyway, I’m partial to apples. I think this Apple Cinnamon Texas Sheet Cake is the cake of the season, especially if you find a crowd (maybe a book club?) to feed? An October Bakehouse flyer will also be featured Biscuit Jammers using Apple Hand Pie Filling by Erin McDowell which is syrupy and seasoned and perfectly sliced. I’m hoping this tastes like the best version of a buttermilk biscuit to go with a McDonald’s apple pie (although they’re really mostly apple jelly at this point). I think they will be beautiful. I will report, clearly.

Puffed Crust Pizza from King Arthur Baking is a really fun weekend baking project and an even better weekend dinner on the couch.

• I don’t know how to explain it, but September seems like the perfect day of the week to order pizza. Except it’s September and instead of ordering out, I have two pizzas to make at home. First, a very fat boy with a night out. Meeting. Overnight Focaccia Pizza. I’m partial to the way the sauce sinks into the focaccia pits and the extra dollops of seasoned ricotta sprinkled on top. The second pizza is on the opposite spectrum Flaky Puff Crust Pizza From King Arthur Becking. It’s a really interesting process where the dough is lightly laminated with butter before being rolled out and re-filled. It’s definitely a fun kitchen adventure! The process is as fun as the result. Highly recommended!

• Have you read the book? ETNA by Paul Yoon? I haven’t had a single brain cell to point in the direction of reading a book all year, and I feel a little defeated for that. I’ve added ETNA to my audiobook list and can’t wait to listen to it. I’m going to do myself a little favor and let me call it reading for now.

But this is also a cry for help. What book made you want to read again after a dry spell?

That’s our five for today, friends. See you in the comments and (fingers crossed) next week!

xo Joy!
